We are pleased to introduce GLSD Online, an interactive online program offering Synchronous and Asynchronous learning for students enrolled in grades K-12 at Greater Latrobe School District for the 2020-2021 school year. The online instruction is provided by Greater Latrobe teachers using the Greater Latrobe curriculum. This program offers flexibility and the option to seamlessly transition back to brick and mortar instruction, if desired.
What is Synchronous Learning?
Synchronous Learning is a general term used to describe forms of education, instruction, and learning that occur at the same time, but not at the same place.
What is Asynchronous Learning?
Asynchronous Learning is a general term used to describe forms of education, instruction, and learning that do not occur in the same place or at the same time.
Students enrolled in the GLSD Online program for the 2020-2021 academic school year will be able to maintain the same class schedule taught by the same GLSD teachers that they would experience in a brick and mortar setting, except learning will occur from the comfort of the student's own home. Attendance will be mandatory. GLSD Online Students will be expected to participate in daily synchronous learning.
Technology Needs are Provided
Technology needs are provided, including a Chromebook with G Suite for Education, internet access, and tech support.
Students enrolled in GLSD Online will use Google Meet in order to view their teachers instructing in real time in the classroom. Students will be able to ask questions using the microphone or through the chat box during the lesson and they will be able to interact with their peers during group work.
Example of GLSD Online Synchronous Learning:
A GLSD junior enrolled in GLSD Online has their first class at 7:40 am. The student will livestream into the class at 7:40 am on their Chromebook using Google Meet. Their teacher will have their own Chromebook set up in their classroom so that the student can view and engage in the lesson in real time. The student can ask questions using their microphone or the chat box. If there is an opportunity for group work, the teacher will place the Chromebook in the appropriate group of students so that the GLSD Online student can participate in the group's discussion. Teachers will post all relevant assignments and information to their Google Classroom so that the GLSD Online student can access them. The GLSD Online student can contact their teacher for any help or questions about a particular assignment.
Example of GLSD Online Asynchronous Learning:
A GLSD second grade student enrolled in GLSD Online is unable to participate in a Google Meet due to childcare. The student/parent contacts the teacher so that the online student can have access to a recording of the daily lesson. The teacher will post all relevant assignments and information to their Google Classroom so that the GLSD Online student has all of the necessary information to understand the lesson. The teacher will be available via email or Google Meet to answer any questions the student may have.
GLSD Online offers students a sense of familiarity while allowing them to maintain relationships and connections with their peers and teachers. The program allows for a seamless transition back into a brick and mortar setting, if desired. A GLSD Online student will still be able to participate in all school-related activities and will receive a Greater Latrobe School District Diploma upon Graduation.
