The Westmoreland Land Trust hosted third graders from Baggaley, Latrobe, and Mountain View Elementary Schools for an outdoor exploration day at St. Xavier Nature Preserve in Unity Township. Students went through four stations: a bird watching hike 🐦, a leaf printing and tree identification station 🍁, catching and examining insects 🐜, and a presentation on bird characteristics 🦉. Mountain View students were even lucky enough to see two bald eagles fly over! 🦅 Thanks to all of the Land Trust members who helped facilitate this program, including Leanna, Dominic, Sara, Erik, Monica, and Dr. Paula Purnell, and for helping connect our students with the great outdoors! 🌲✨

Latrobe Elementary School first graders learned about recycling, reducing, and reusing from guest speaker, Natalee Reese, from Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling. Students learned how a landfill is created and used and talked about ways to recycle and reuse things around the home. ♻

Dr. Jordan, Greater Latrobe Junior High Band Director, was invited to present his research at the National Association for Music Education’s Biennial Research and Teacher Education Conference in Long Beach, California, on October 1. The conference brought together music educators from all 50 states for sessions focused on music teaching, learning, and policy. Dr. Jordan’s research explored the relationship between Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and adaptive music education. Congratulations, Dr. Jordan! 🎶🧡🖤

Mountain View Elementary kindergarten students visited Dryridge Volunteer Fire Department on October 7th to explore the fire trucks, meet community helpers, and learn important fire safety tips. Thank you to the Unity Township Fire Bureau for providing this opportunity! 🚒✨💗

Latrobe Elementary kindergarten students had the best time exploring Gearhard Farms—from bouncing along on a bumpy wagon ride to testing out their teamwork in the corn maze! Seeing them laugh, ask great questions, and experience real agriculture up close is what fall field trips are all about. 🍂🌻

In honor of National Manufacturing Month, Greater Latrobe Senior High School students participated in “Next in STEM" Day at Kennametal, Inc. in Latrobe. Students were given an extensive research and development tour, engaged in a question-and-answer roundtable panel, and enjoyed a networking lunch. Thank you to Kennametal Inc. for providing this opportunity for students from local area school districts.

Baggaley Elementary School second grade students created their own one-of-a-kind fairy tale characters! Students first learned about the components of fairy tale characters with their homeroom teachers, then brought their ideas to life through a special art collaboration with their art teacher, Mrs. Poska. 🎨

From villains and heroes to royalty and everything in between, their creativity took them in so many wonderful directions! We loved seeing these imaginative characters come to life! 🏰🔮👑💫

Latrobe Elementary School first graders recently completed a CKLA Knowledge unit on how your body works. To wrap up the unit, medical professional and first grade parent, Kristina Manley, visited and gave a presentation with her friend - Skelly - teaching students ways to stay healthy and take care of their bodies. Together they covered topics such as eating a healthy diet or "rainbow foods", wearing sunscreen, brushing teeth, wearing a helmet, exercising, washing hands, and what happens when you go to the doctor for a check-up. She even performed a check-up on Skelly to show us how it is done! 🏥 💗

Baggaley Elementary School Kindergarten classes visited the Lloydsville Fire Station as part of the Unity Township Fire Bureau Fire Prevention Program. Students learned about fire safety while touring the apparatus and watching a vehicle rescue demonstration. Thank you to our local fire departments, including Youngstown, Lloydsville, Pleasant Unity, and the Unity Township Fire Bureau for providing this opportunity for our students!

At a recent Rotary Club of Latrobe luncheon, the Rotary Club recognized Students of the Month from Greater Latrobe Senior High School — Noah Skoloda and Ava George! 🎓 Noah is an active member of the Greater Latrobe band and drama club. He plays trombone and serves as a Low Brass Captain, and is also involved in Concert Band and Chamber Choir. Noah will be performing as Wadsworth in the upcoming school musical, Clue. After graduation, he plans to attend Saint Vincent College to major in biochemistry with hopes of becoming a forensic scientist. Ava is also active in the marching band and drama club and will take on the role of Miss Scarlett in the upcoming musical, Clue. She loves singing and songwriting and serves as an alto leader in choir. After graduation, Ava plans to attend Saint Vincent College, where she hopes to double major in materials science and mechanical engineering. Each week, the Rotary Club of Latrobe features a different school district at their meetings, including Students of the Month from Eastern Westmoreland Career & Technology Center, Derry Area Senior High School, and Greater Latrobe Senior High School.
