Baggaley Elementary School participated in The Pennsylvania Trout in the Classroom (PA TIC) program during the 2025-26 school year. The program is a hands-on environmental education program where students raise trout from eggs to small fish called fingerlings in a classroom aquarium while learning about streams, watersheds, and conservation.

The tank was in a central location at BES where all grade levels had access to observe the trout. Mr. Simms and a team of sixth graders were responsible for caring for the trout, including monitoring the aquarium’s water temperature, oxygen levels, and water quality to keep the trout alive and healthy, along with keeping up with the "Trout Questions" board where any student can ask questions regarding the trout.

At the end of the school year, Mr. Simms and the sixth grade team released the trout into an approved stream, with help from the Valley School of Ligonier.

Greater Latrobe High School welcomed regional educators for ASM Materials
Camp®–Teachers during the week of July 13 in partnership with the ASM Materials Education Foundation. The week-long program gave teachers hands-on materials science and engineering experiences to strengthen STEM instruction and inspire students through real-world applications. Participants explored metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites through labs, demonstrations, and classroom-ready experiments. With support from industry professionals and instructors, teachers gained practical tools to bring materials science to life for students.

"High-quality professional learning gives teachers the confidence, knowledge, and hands-on experiences they need to inspire students in new and meaningful ways," said Becki Pellis, Assistant to the Superintendent Elementary Education at Greater Latrobe School District. "Opportunities like ASM Materials Camp provide educators with practical strategies and real-world materials science experiences that they can immediately bring back to their classrooms. We are incredibly grateful to our local industry partners for investing in our teachers. Their support not only strengthens classroom instruction but also helps spark students' interest in future careers while building a stronger workforce and community for years to come."

The camp was made possible through the partnership Westmoreland Mechanical Research & Testing and Carpenter Technology – Latrobe. Their involvement helps deliver hands-on STEM experiences that inspire students and showcase career pathways in materials science, engineering, and advanced manufacturing.

From June 15-19, approximately 60 students in grades 4-6 participated in the second annual Summer Band Lessons program. They spent the week building their musical skills, making new friends, and growing confidence as young musicians!

Throughout the camp, students participated in sectionals, full-group activities, and fun musical activities designed to strengthen their skills. We wrapped up the week with a fantastic performance put on by the students for their families.

A huge thank you to our students, families, high school volunteers, and GLSD music staff for making this camp such a successful and memorable experience!

Wildcat of the Month
Greater Latrobe Senior High School student, Kaden Shannon, has been selected for the prestigious NASA STEM Enhancement in Earth and Space Science (SEES) Summer Internship at The University of Texas at Austin Center for Space Research. 🚀

During this nationally competitive program funded by NASA, students collaborate with scientists and engineers to conduct authentic research, use data from NASA Earth-observing satellites, design Lunar and Mars habitats, analyze imagery from the International Space Station, and investigate the effects of microgravity. The program is designed to expand student knowledge and experience in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through advanced Earth and space science education. ⚛

Students apply for SEES and are selected competitively. Over 3000 applications were received for the coveted 118 on-site internship positions. Students work remotely with their project scientist prior to the on-site internship, complete an Earth and Space Science course and a Python coding course, and hear from NASA Subject Matter Experts as part of the SEES Speaker Series. Students selected will then come together July 5 in Austin, Texas to conduct experiments, tour facilities, network with other students, and conduct research while being mentored by NASA, industry, and academia subject matter experts at The University of Texas at Austin.

Congratulations, Kaden! 🌟 #WildcatPride 🧡🖤
