Greater Latrobe Senior High School was honored to host Dr. Glenn Kashurba for a presentation on the history and impact of Flight 93 to commemorate the upcoming 25th anniversary of September 11th. Dr. Kashurba is a nationally recognized Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with a broad and distinguished medical career as a Disaster Psychiatrist. When Flight 93 crashed 6 miles from his office in rural Somerset County, Dr. Kashurba responded and volunteered with the American Red Cross to provide support to the grieving families at the Shanksville crash site. He subsequently chronicled the experiences of local residents who helped during the disaster with his book Courage After the Crash. Kashurba donated his author's royalties to 9/11 and children's charities.

During his presentation, Dr. Kashurba shared critical insights into courage, resilience, and community strength, including sharing the heroism of the brave passengers and crew who fought back to protect our nation, the extraordinary compassion shown by Somerset County residents, first responders, and local volunteers, and teaching students how communities heal and find strength through unity after a national tragedy. Thank you to Dr. Kashurba for this powerful day of history and remembrance. #NeverForget

At Greater Latrobe Junior and Senior High Schools, trained 8th grade mentors, known as W.E.B. leaders (Where Everybody Belongs), and trained high school mentors, known as Link Crew leaders, assisted teachers and counselors in running an orientation program on the first day of school for incoming 7th and 9th graders. Students participated in large group icebreakers as well as small group activities designed to break down barriers and build relationships. WEB leaders and Link Crew leaders will continue to meet with 7th graders and 9th graders throughout the entire year for academic and social follow-ups as well as individual leader initiated contacts to ensure all students are confidently navigating their way through their first year at the Junior and Senior High Schools.

Greater Latrobe Senior High students in the *new* AP Business course used hands-on project-based learning as an introduction to the topics they will be learning about in the class throughout the year. They completed a Chips Ahoy Mining Activity to learn about productivity, scarcity, opportunity cost, revenue, profit, teamwork, communications, capital, risk, and decision-making. It was a sweet way to introduce core business disciplines! 🍪✨

Thank you to the Greater Latrobe and Derry Area Interact Clubs, who volunteered their time at Friday night’s “Backyard Brawl” football game to collect donations for the Rotary Club of Latrobe’s “Food for Thought” Backpack Program. Thanks to their efforts as well as all of the generous community members who donated, both groups were able to raise an impressive total of $3,100 for the Backpack Program, which benefits students from both Greater Latrobe and Derry Area school districts. This equates to 258 backpacks filled with food to help feed students every weekend for the entire school year! THANK YOU to both school communities who came together last night for this great cause! 🙌

Many thanks to all involved who helped make this year's parking spot project a great success! ✨Community members are welcome to drive through our parking lot outside of school hours to observe ALL of the amazing painted spaces! 🌟
